Sell Limit
What is the Sell Limit in Trading?
A sell limit is a pending order to sell an asset at a specific price or higher. You place it above the current market price when you want to open a short position only if price first rises to your chosen level. It gives you price control (you won’t sell below your limit), but the order won’t fill if the market never reaches that price.
What is a Sell Limit Order?
A sell limit order, also called a limit sell, tells the platform:
“If the market goes up to my chosen price, sell there (or better). Otherwise, do nothing.”
This lets you try to sell at a better price after a bounce, rather than selling immediately.
Sell Limit Order Example
- Current price: EURUSD 1.10180
- You think price may bounce to 1.10250 and then fall.
- You place a sell limit order at 1.10250.
- If the market trades up to 1.10250, your short is opened around that price.
- You might set a stop loss at 1.10320 and a take profit at 1.10050.
This is a common sell limit in forex setup: aim to enter short at a higher, pre-defined level on pairs like EURUSD or USDJPY, quoted in Dollar or Yen.
How Sell Limit Works
- Choose price: Set your limit above the current market.
- Add risk controls: Set stop loss and take profit.
- Wait for trigger: If price reaches your limit, the platform sells at your limit or better.
- No touch, no trade: If price never gets there, the order stays pending.
Sell Limit vs Sell Stop
- Sell limit:
- Placed above current price.
- Used to sell after a bounce (sell higher).
- Price control: Yes, won’t sell below your limit.
- Fill certainty: Not guaranteed; needs price to reach your level.
- Sell Stop:
- Placed below current price.
- Used to sell on a breakdown (join downside momentum).
- Price control: Lower, often executes at the next available price once triggered.
- Fill certainty: More likely to trigger in a fast drop, but final fill price can vary.
This is the practical sell limit vs sell stop distinction.
Sell Limit on MT5
On MT5, a sell limit is created via Pending Order → Sell Limit. You set the price above current market price, define volume, stop loss, take profit, and (optionally) expiry. This is often called mt5 sell limit in platform guides.
