Sell Stop

What is a Sell Stop in Trading?

A sell stop is a pending order to sell below the current market price. You use a sell stop order when you want to open a short position only if price first drops to (or through) your chosen level. It’s sometimes called a stop sell order.

How a Sell Stop Order Works

  1. Set the stop price below the current market.
  2. If price reaches the stop, your order triggers.
  3. After triggering, on most platforms it becomes a market sell and fills at the next available price (could be a little better or worse, depending on speed and volatility).

Sell Stop Example

  • Current price: EURUSD 1.10240
  • You expect a breakdown if price falls further.
  • Place a sell stop at 1.10180.
  • If price trades down to 1.10180, your short position opens around that level.
  • You might set a stop loss at 1.10260 and a take profit at 1.10050.

This is a common sell stop use-case in CFDs on currencies like Dollar, Euro, or Yen.

Difference Between Sell Stop vs Sell Limit

Sell stop:

  • Placed below current price.
  • Used to sell on a breakdown (join downward momentum).
  • After trigger, usually a market order → higher chance of execution, less price control.

Sell limit:

  • Placed above current price.
  • Used to sell after a bounce at a higher price.
  • Executes at your limit or better → more price control, not guaranteed to fill.

This is the practical sell limit vs sell stop distinction.

Sell Stop vs Sell Stop Limit

  • Sell stop (stop-market): Triggers a market sell once the stop price is touched. You’ll likely be filled, but not always at the exact stop price (slippage is possible).
  • Sell stop limit (stop-limit sell/stop limit sell order): Triggers a limit sell when the stop is touched. It will only fill at the limit price or better. You control price, but execution is not guaranteed if the market moves past your limit.

What is a sell stop limit order? It’s a two-price instruction: a stop price (trigger) and a limit price (worst acceptable price).

Sell Stop Limit Order Example

  • Current price: EURUSD 1.10240
  • You set Stop = 1.10180 and Limit = 1.10170.
  • If price reaches 1.10180, your sell stop limit order activates a limit sell at 1.10170.
  • It will fill at 1.10170 or better (higher).
  • If price gaps straight to 1.10150, the order may not fill, leaving the position unopened.
