What Is a Downtrend?

A downtrend happens when the price of an asset steadily falls over time. In charts, you'll see this as a series of lower highs and lower lows, like steps descending downward. This pattern shows that sellers are in charge and pushing prices lower.

How Does a Downtrend Help Traders?

• Clear price direction: When a downtrend forms, it signals that the market is tilted towards selling, helping traders understand the general mood.
• Trade setup guidance: Downtrends often act like a guide. It’s common to draw a downward-sloping trendline connecting recent lower highs. This line can hint at resistance zones.
• Short-trading opportunities: In CFDs or forex markets, many traders look to enter short positions (betting on price drops) during a downtrend, aiming to profit as prices keep falling.

Downtrend Example

Imagine watching a chart for EURUSD when the current price is 1.16250:

• The price drops to 1.16200, then falls again to 1.16150 (a lower low).
• It tries to rally but reaches only 1.16180, less than the previous high (a lower high).
• It then drops further to 1.16100.

These lower highs and lower lows make a clear downward staircase, exactly what a downtrend in forex looks like.
