Session Overlap

What is Session Overlap in Trading?

Why Session Overlap Matters

  • More liquidity: Easier to enter/exit positions; spreads often improve.
  • More movement: Important news releases and heavier institutional flow can create clearer trends.

The Most-Watched Overlap (GMT time)

If you’re looking up forex trading session overlap times, the key one is the London–New York window. The commonly referenced London-New York session overlap GMT time is:

  • 12:00–16:00 GMT when the U.S. is on daylight saving time, and
  • 13:00–17:00 GMT when the U.S. is on standard time.

Other overlaps exist (for example, Tokyo–London around 08:00–09:00 GMT), but London–New York is typically the busiest.

Session Overlap Example

Suppose EURUSD is active during the overlap and moves from 1.10201 to 1.10271 quickly. Many day traders time entries and exits in this window because participation is higher and spreads can be tighter, classic session overlap in trading use. (In everyday terms, this is also called session overlap in forex.)

How Traders Use The Overlap Window

  • Plan around news: In the London–New York overlap, watch U.S. NFP/CPI 12:30/13:30 GMT, ISM 14:00/15:00 GMT, BoE 11:00/12:00 GMT; note UK CPI prints earlier 06:00/07:00 GMT.
  • Choose liquid products: Major indices, Gold, and heavily traded currency (like pairs quoted in Dollar, Euro, or Yen).
  • Risk Mamagment: Fast moves are possible, use predefined stop loss and target.
