BOS (Break of Structure)

What is a Break of Structure in Trading?

A Break of Structure (BoS) is a market event where price action moves beyond a significant support or resistance level, creating a new swing high or low and indicating a potential shift in trend or momentum. It’s a core concept in CFDs trading and is widely used by Smart Money traders to identify trend continuations, reversals, or possible entry points.

For CFDs and forex traders, understanding a break of structure is essential for reading market behavior and improving trade decisions. In simple terms, a BoS in forex happens when price no longer respects a previous high or low and instead breaks through that level, forming a new market structure. This often signals the end of a pullback and the continuation of the current trend, or the start of a new trend altogether.

Break of Structure Example in Forex

Let’s take the EURUSD currency pair as an example.

  • In an uptrend, traders typically observe a series of higher highs and higher lows. A bullish Break of Structure in forex is confirmed when price moves above the most recent higher high on EURUSD, forming a new one. This signals that buyers are still in control and the uptrend is likely to continue.
  • In a downtrend, traders look for lower lows and lower highs. A bearish BoS on a pair like GBPUSD would occur when price breaks below the last lower low, creating a new one. This continuation reinforces the bearish sentiment and helps traders stay aligned with the trend.

Recognizing these shifts in structure allows traders to plan entries, exits, and stop-loss levels with more precision.

Change of Character (ChoCh) vs Break of Structure (BoS)

Though they’re often confused, Change of Character (ChoCh) and Break of Structure (BoS) represent different price behaviors:

  • A Change of Character signals a potential reversal or pause in trend. For example, if EURUSD has been trending down but suddenly breaks a recent lower high, traders might see this as early evidence of a shift toward a bullish bias. However, this move may lack follow-through and result in consolidation.
  • A Break of Structure, on the other hand, confirms the market’s commitment to a new direction. When price sustains movement beyond a key level, like forming a new higher high after a ChoCh, it validates the directional bias.

Many BoS trading strategies use both concepts together. Traders first watch for a ChoCh as an early clue, and then wait for a BoS to confirm entry signals for higher-probability trades.
